Hello Everyone,
In case you haven't heard by now, the SVTU fly tying evenings will start on
Tuesday, January 19th and run every other Tuesday evening for a total of 6
sessions. We will start at 7:30 PM and quit about 9:30 PM. Thus, the dates
to be entered in your calendars are Jan. 19, Feb. 2, Feb 16, Mar. 2, Mar.
16, and Mar. 30, 2010.
The sessions will be held at the Izaak Walton League Clubhouse in Germantown
where we had them last year and where (most of) the SVTU chapter meetings
are now being held.
BEGINNERS ARE WELCOME!! As last year, I will teach beginners. Tools and
materials will be provided. The teaching will roughly go from 7:30 to 8:30
after which the beginners will tie up 2-3 of the flies which have been
demonstrated. The chapter has recently been the recipient of a gift of some
fly tying vices and materials and these will be made available on a first
come, first serve basis. Experienced tyers who have extra vices and tools
are encouraged to bring them along so that no one will be without.
For more experienced tyers, there will be a chapter "guru" at each session
who will demonstrate how to tie and fish one of their favorite flies. The
first session's "guru" will be Dick Switalski who show how to tie his
version of the gold ribbed hare's ear nymph. On February 2, John Lachin
will be our "guru" and I have asked him to tie up caddis flies and nymphs
which he has used successfully on Little Seneca Creek.
The curriculum for beginners again is very much like last year. Session #1
will feature the "green weenie" and if there is time, a green caddis larva.
Session #2 will feature woolly worms and woolly buggers. Session #3 will
feature pheasant tail nymphs with a few variations on that theme. Session
#4 will involve dry flies, in particular the "Variant" patterns as
developed by Art Flick. Session #5 will continue dry flies, focusing on the
the Elk Hair Caddis, and if there is time, the Adams.
The 6th week will be devoted to fishing in the IWL pond where we can try out
some of the patterns we have tied up.
If any of you have children, relatives, or friends who are anglers and
interested in fly tying, feel free to bring them along. The More the
Merrier!! I also encourage fly tyers with extra materials of any sort, to
bring them along to share or exchange with other tyers.
For any questions, just reply to this email. Or call; my telephone # is
240-401-8669.
Looking forward to getting together on Tuesday evening.
